Mayle's Final Hours, Part I

Here are, as promised, photos of Mayle's last hours. I'll include more in subsequent posts as there are too many for one page. These were taken between about 6p.m.-7.15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 31. I'll include photos of the final Votivo Red Current candle, the merchandise, the changing room on the left and pictures of all of us in the store, including Elise, Christina and Sumer. I took some photos of myself in the mirror, not for narcissism's sake but to remember the hours spent checking out new arrivals, future purchases, and sometimes errant styles. I hope that this gives you a flavor of how the store's last minutes felt. If asked, I'd say surprisingly normal and surprisingly quiet. It was hard to believe that these minutes were being committed to memory. As the photos show, we were all light-hearted. Elise, Christina, Sumer, Cindy, Chelsea, Monica, myself and others toasted Jane Mayle and ate cupcakes while discussing past favorites, items we loved, those we missed and pieces we hoped would still be recut.

Monica wore Ignacia and Cindy wore the Michaela recut in Rio Plata and both looked beautiful. Cindy wore a fabulous combination of a Rio Plata top and Gaia pants with some killer heels. Cindy and one other girl (whose name I forgot, sorry) had fabulous LD Tuttle heels--it turned out the designer went to school with Christina too.

As we reluctantly left for the final time--Monica, Cindy and I were the last customers to leave--it seemed impossible that anything could change. But the end is here: Christina and Elise were going to paper over the windows after we left, and the store would start to be dismantled. Those walls we know so well will soon be gone, the pictures removed, the counter and chairs moved out and the candle finally snuffed out.

I can't really believe it. I don't think I can walk down that block on Elizabeth Street again before the sample sale. After that, I will be giving 242 Elizabeth Street a wide berth, keeping the time capsule that Mayle has become pristine, hoping that in some alternative universe, everything is still ticking over as normal, new items are coming in, each collection better than the last, delivering delicious items that capture my imagination, fancy and bank account.

Thank you, Jane Mayle, Elise, Christina, Doris, Vanessa, Alize, Summer and all of you for such a wonderful 8 years (I know it was longer, but for me, it was just that). If I could have a few wishes, I'd have a healthy baby of my own first, but Mayle's return--in the same space, with the same aura--would be near the top.

Moya,

That was so beautifully put, thank you so much for describing the final Mayle experience so well. Ordinarily, I would hate to see pictures of me posted, but I am really glad you took them and it was so nice to get together to say goodbye to 242 Elizabeth. I doubt our next visit for the sample sale will be as pleasant ;). I loved what everyone wore and because of you I have been searching for the Virginie non-stop - that blouse is fabulous and you wore it amazingly. Cindy looked great in the rio plata michaela - it was perfect on her. And Chelsea looked fabulous, as always.

I also have no doubt that you will be a mom in Mayle, so please try to stay in good spirits.
Thank you for this post!!! - Monica

Thank you, Monica. I normally wouldn't post pictures of people but I wanted to mark the event and our participation in it. It was so good to see you the other day--and hopefully we will see each other again very soon.

And thank you for the kind wishes. I bought the OV watch today and am wearing it to improve my chances of becoming a mom really soon.

moya - thank you for so sweetly capturing the last mayle moments. i really wish i could have been there, though my romance with mayle hasn't been for nearly as long as some of you devotees. but 242 elizabeth is always a place i've stopped during my frequent visits to new york, and i will certainly miss when i do my regular jaunt through nolita. the girls there are so lovely and helpful and it was truly a pleasure to shop there. i will miss dearly it along with the rest of you.

you all looked so lovely in your mayle outfits! all in things i wish i owned. hopefully, i'll get to meet you and the rest of the mayle gals at the sample sale! we should all go out for a cocktail or coffee afterwards where we can all give one final cheers to mayle and moms in mayle (both present and future)!

Moya, I felt like I was there. Your post is exactly how I feel. Its so funny a friend of mine was walking down elizabeth street the other day and twittered that it wasnt the same walking down elizabeth w/o me because I always found a reason to stop into Mayle, dragging her with me.

It was hard for me when the shop moved from 252 to 242. I remember spending many an hour on a lazy sunday during the winter talking to my friend Rebekah who worked at Mayle for years before moving back to New Zealand. But i soon embraced the new store and the succession of managers, shop girls etc. Spending hours talking to them, getting to know them. I have to admit nothing felt most like those days with Rebekah until Alica became manager and hired doris, Allie and Elise. Ally left and Jo replaced her and that staff was still great.

I have been feeling a bit down the past few days - mostly due to the end of mayle, the end of an era and the end of something that was just so special. Thanks Moya for sharing with us. If I was still in NYC I would have been right there with you. I am only sad that Jane wasn't there to turn the sign to closed...

Marti,

I believe Jane may have been in the back - I saw her enter the side door (wearing the belda coat, black ankle boots and black pants). Her friend Kazu (wearing leopard print Marius) from blonde redhead and fellow band member swung by the store.

Moya and Cindy, please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks Moya for beautiful post.
Like LivKate I normally I won't be happy to see pictures of me but I am so glad with all of these photos and so thankful that you took them.
I would love to download some if you don't mind.

I thought it'd be so busy around 5 so I went there pretty early so that I can have good chat with girls - and it was nice.
I can't believe I stayed there more than 2 hours, but It wasn't only me , people would come and tried the clothes for one last time ( which I did, also) and we were all just talking and eating..( treats were keep coming!!!)

You guys all looked so, so great,
Moya you looked very elegant in the top, Monica you looked beautiful, lovely in that dress.
and oh Cindy, you looked fantastic, and you know that dress inspired me to wear my rio plata top.
Everyone came in wearing something Mayle, and I know, we all had to.

Moya, the girl with the great style w feather LD tuttle shoes was Cedra. She' so cute, isn't she?

I know I had to leave early for dinner, but it was great to be w all of you on our special day.

I am so afraid to walk by elizabeth street now..

Moya, thanks again with this post,
and you will be A Fabulous mom in Mayle very soon.

See all of you in couple weeks! ( THE SAMPLE SALE!!!!!)

Monica's right--Kazu came in and Jane entered through the side. I think Elise and Christina were momentarily a little worried because there was champagne--bought by customers--and alcohol is not allowed in the store. I guess Jane was fine with it, however. She was there but she didn't come into the store--she stayed in the back.

Hi Chelsea,

Please download them. I put all my photos on my flickr account so anybody can download the ones that feature them. As I said, ordinarily I would not post pictures of anybody (other than me) but this seemed a different and special occasion. I hope it is OK with you.

Cedra was lovely! I am pleased that I have her name now.

I do so hope I'll be a mom in Mayle--that's my number one hope, dream and prayer.

See you all soon--and, yes, cocktails/food whatever after the sample sale would be really great.

Moya - oh lord, I can't believe I didn't give you a single picture without a goofy face (so sorry!). You've given the Mayle closure such a touching post, you speak for all of us and how we feel. I wish the Mayle girls the very best of luck with all of their future endeavors.

Moya, Monica, Chelsea - it was so, so good to see all of you. I loved the ensembles - and all of the shoes... I am looking forward to seeing all of you at the final sale!

Lorochills - you got my Ada?! I am so glad you love it and it is awesome that it's gone to such a deserving home. It is such an elegant dress. I hope it brings you happy adventures!

Moya - thank you for so eloquently capturing the last moments at 242 Elizabeth. It was wonderful to be able to read about it, especially for those of us who were unable to attend.

In other Mayle news - I have a black reiko, size 2 that I am interested in selling. I adore the dress, but I think that it is just a little bit too small on me and doesn't quite hang right. If anyoen is interested, send me an email at leannemdavis5(at)gmail(dot)com. I would be interested in a swap as well.

thanks for documenting mayle's last day, moya. as always, i appreciate your updates! i was in the store on monday (made a special trip from philly). although i was disappointed that there was no new shipment, i was thrilled to see kazu from blonde redhead outside the store. i wonder what last goodies she got!

Moya, thank you for sharing your photos. Your post was so eloquently written. Ya know, you would be an amazing english or lit professor!

It's nice to see what the shop looked like in the final hours especially since I've never been there. :( Everyone looks so beautiful in their Mayle and I hope to meet you all next time I'm in NYC! It's sad that Jane didn't come out to bid farewell.

Thank you for sharing the photos and comments! Everyone looks gorgeous in Mayle outfits! I still can't believe the store has closed already, but I am not sad because for some reason I think Jane will come back to fashion someday and this would be a brief hiatus for her line. That's just what's in my head, anyway. :)

I spot some Michaelas left and I wonder if they would make it to the sample sale. I would love to own the grey floral printed Michaela but can't afford it at full price :(
