Damn Taxes

So it looks like I owe the IRS $2,224. I thought I'd owe a little (NYU doesn't take enough out) but I'm shocked. I guess this means the Mayle sample sale goes on my credit card. I'll get a state credit of $1,100, but it will take a while to process so I'm paying out this month in taxes more than I even earn. Then the COBRA bill comes due, if I am lucky. I can't see how this happened as I always have extra taken out so I can spend a little each spring.

Oh wow. At least you get a state refund though. In CT we are only able to claim a max of $500 property taxes - that isn't even one tenth of what we pay! I always used to get a refund. Since I moved east - no luck. I always looked forward to an extra bit of shopping money in April too.

Our accountant had to file for an extension. We owe NY State $500 and possibly owe the feds $3K. Of course itsmy fault b/c I didnt have taxes taken out of my unemployment. i told him that he needs to be more agressive. we paid about $5700 last year. Some tax credit for having a child!

Wow. I'm sorry Marti. I'm going to mail a check very soon, after I calm down enough to print out the paperwork and spend what I thought was Mayle money. I thought having a child was supposed to help. Oh well.

Sorry about your CT Property Tax allowance, Leanne. I hope you get a refund soon.

I can't believe that my savings are taking this much of a hit with COBRA and taxes. Last year, I got back over $1,600. I was hoping I'd at least break even this year. Oh well.

On a positive note, I found my Mayle Summer 06 lookbook when I was looking for last year's tax returns. I knocked papers behind the dresser so I had to pull out the lookbook while grabbing the receipts.

Ugh, what an unpleasant surprise! Sorry to hear about this, Moya. April can be a cruel month. Things will get better soon, hang in there!

Has anyone heard anything further about the sample sale? I am praying I'll be able to skip out of work in the morning to go. We should meet up! I feel sad that I missed out on all the fun with the last days of Mayle because I was busy dealing with moving, etc.

Thanks, Susie. I'm fortunate that I at least have the money in this economy, but it was a shock, to say the least. I wasn't expecting a rebate on my federal taxes but I imagined I owed $500-$800 tops. At this point, I'm more stressed about the health care/no baby issue and the job I interviewed for three weeks ago. As they haven't got back to me, I have to stop stressing and assume I didn't get it, despite the positive feedback I received at the time and afterwards.

I've heard nothing about the sample sale. I hope it is arranged soon--I will probably have to cancel class to go at this point, now spring break is over. Marti heard that there would be a tweet today about new re-editions and I imagine they'll see how those sell before arranging the sample sale. Who knows--it could be May before they arrange the sale. I think we're all on tenterhooks on this one.

I hope the move went well and that you are doing OK. I certainly hope we can meet up at the sale!

my parents were hit with an extra $7000 tax bill this year because their new condo is worth less than the previous house. they had been planning on going to korea for my dad's 60th birthday. such a bummer.

i'm glad you're getting a state refund, though. it really stinks how all this money keeps being shuffled from taxes to credits to bills, and never to anything fun!

i am feeling anxious about this sample sale. hopefully they'll give us enough warning so that we can make travel plans.

I'm so sorry to hear about that, Erica. It puts my tax woes into perspective. I hope they are able to make it to Korea for his birthday in any event.
