Temptation

Much as I want to visit Mayle and update you on the pop up shop, I have work to do. That said, it has been tough to sit at home today without checking racked.com and googling "Mayle pop up shop" for reports on what lies within. Without look books, photos, web previews and all the other media surrounding a new collection, I can only imagine what is being sold and what the price points might be (I am guessing around $700+ for dresses, $500+ for tops, but I really have no idea). I can't buy any of it anyway, so I tell myself it doesn't matter. But it is such a distraction. How can I concentrate on Progressivism and Early Cinema, outline the modernity thesis and debates around transitional cinema when there is a jewel box of a shop filled with new and rare clothes?
Discipline is failing me today. At least with 50-60 degree weather this weekend, I can try out some of those new Mayle purchases that hang unworn in my closet. If I finish the intro this weekend, I may even be able to dream of adding one more item to them if a real favorite turns up at the pop up shop, in my size and in my price range. Somehow, though, I doubt it. I'd rather hope that some of this won't sell and it will end up in a sample sale and go home with me that way.

Hi Moya, The prices are actually really reasonable. As I live out of state now, Jane selected 3 pieces that she thought I would love (and I did!) The dresses are going for $395-$495. The tops range about the same with the lowest price clocking in around $335. Most of the pieces are up to size 6 only (2,4,6) but a few styles/fabric combos are a full size run. I got the Barcelona dress (from back in 2003) in the Amalfi flower print $395, The Petunia dress (based on the re-issue from spring 2007 and the original from 2004 in an aztec lace) for $495 and the sylvana top in the black lace that was used to inset the Pina dress from holiday 2007 for $495. A friend went to the store at 2:30 and said it was very picked over. I have pictures of the stuff I bought on my blog and will upload them to Flicker.

Wow. Thanks Marti. I just saw your items and they are stunning. I love all of them. Alas, I am a size 8, so I suppose there will be little in my size. Elise had said the size range would be limited. I'd call but it is likely insane.

My willpower not to spend is going out the window. Does anyone have any idea how often the shop will be updated? I have to plan the most strategic day to visit nyc.

Mine went completely just now. I called Mayle but they aren't picking up. I guess I am not surprised, especially with dresses topping out at $495. I so want something and even more I'd love to see what she made. There are some fabrics I'd love to have in my closet--I would stay away from black and ivory as I have so many Mayle dresses that are monochrome. Something purple, one of her deep pinks, a green or a cobalt blue item would be wonderful. If I didn't have plans tonight, I'd be out of the door right now.

I'm thinking that I may have take a quick trip in one day next week between practices! At least the ride should only be about an hour from where I work.

Moya said...

If you are in on a Tues or Thurs, we could meet up, Leanne. I teach all day Mondays and Wednesdays.

Anonymous said...

do they have any bags??

leanne said...

Moya - I'll send you an email and let you know what works out with my new work schedule. I could probably manage a Thursday.

Moya said...

That sounds great, Leanne.
Yuri--I think they are getting some Baby Billies in. I don't know if they have them yet.

Marti said...

They only have dresses, tops, skirts & pants. There is supposed to be stuff trickling in every day... though from what I hear its 2 deliveries with the clogs in the second one. The average price is $395.

oh my god marti, i love your new mayle pieces!

sigh, those prices are enough to tempt me to really make an effort to go to the city later this month.

I called Mayle earlier asking about my online order, and asked about the in store merchandise as well so just wanted to share. They've gotten in 7-10 styles today but have sold most of it. They will be getting shipments throughout the next few weeks until they close at the end of March or early April. There will be NO Billie bags.

btw, thanks so much Moya for posting the stores that may have the Jemeen dress I was looking for. I tracked one down at Studio Sebastian in a size bigger than I was hoping for, but they agreed to price match Mayle's 60% off price! It's on its way to me and I am so excited. Thank you so much Moya!!

Marti said...

I can let you guys know when they get more stuff if you want. Jane has been pretty good to me as she knows how obsessed I am and that I can't get to the shop.

Moya said...

I am so glad you got the Jemeen! That's fabulous.

Also, I just spoke to Doris. Right now only sizes 2-6 in dresses and tops. Elise and Doris are upset as nothing fits them either. The only pieces they had that ran big were the Ishii dress and top--and I have the Ishii dress already. :( More stock next week, however.

Marti--that would be amazing. Thank you so much. You are a sweetheart. I am amazed at how nice all the Mayle fans I met have been. I do hope she makes some size 8s so I can get two or three dresses from the limited collection. I feel so greedy...

I was there at opening and Jane was there looking fabulous, as always. I bought the sylvana top in a stunning black and white lace( marked as 1 of 3 pieces made) but it was muy $$$$$ ...$545! The shop was bit of a madhouse and overall I was a little underwhelmed by the pieces overall. But there were a couple of exceptional finds. FYI - All previous collections have been boxed away for the sample sale. Marti, I cannot seem to find your photos, I would love to see them.

Marti --

Finally saw the pictures (I managed to figure out how to find them). You really scored! You bought, in my opinion, the best pieces (in addition to my blouse, of course ;) ) that Mayle had today. Doris and Elyse are indeed the sweetest and most lovely ladies ever. I will miss gabbing with them too. I have been shopping at Mayle since 2001 and am really going to miss her designs and little shop. Total sadness. Wearing her pieces really had a way of making you feel a little extra special. They were like mini works of art.
Moya,
Thank you for allowing us all to wax poetic.

I would def stop by asap (I know everyone is busy) but she def had some 8's. And I am happy to alert everyone when i hear things come in.

Yeah some of the prices are a little higher. from what I understand, if Jane REALLY likes the fabric that piece is more expensive. But what was there today is only the start. I have a feeling that better styles + cooler fabrics are going to pop up soon. Jane said that there were some very "marti" pieces coming soon. For some reason those words scare my bank account.

LivKate said...

Hi Marti,

I just read the tag on my top and it is Sylvana in Pansy Net. Do you know what other designs used this fabric? BTW, I just looked at your photo and realize that you and I have spoken at the mayle trunk shows. How do you like Portland, my husband has considered applying for some opportunities there.

hello marti,

i saw the pieces that jane selected for you and have to say that they are beautiful. lucky you:)

i will not be able to make it into the city but would you be able to let us know when new things come in? the clogs in a size 38 or 39 would be the only thing i would really want.

do you happen to know when the second shipment will hit.

moya-i wanted to ignore the limited editions pieces but i also find myself wanting to not only covet but own as well.

I went by the shop after work today. I was extremely impressed by a few things, but underwhelmed by others.

The good: Mitsu dresses in 3 lovely fabrics; poet-sleeve high-neck floaty tops with a bib front and 3/4 sleeves in sheer prints; lacy tunic and wrap tops (resort 2007 eyelet and tiny lace, all with mutton, back-slit sleeves); exceedingly billowy dresses (high neck w/ bib and 3/4 sleeves) in deep purple and metallic bronze.

The bad: several styles of flared pants - heinous patterned fabric pants. Sleeveless v-neck knee-length dress with no bells and whistles, a bit matronly. Cropped wrap tops in lovely fabrics, but also seemed very soccer mom going through a mid-life crisis.

The neutral: short Letiecia skirts (many fabrics). Petulia dress (lovely lace, but Doris and I agreed that it's a bit costumey and cutesy).

The fabrics that I'm capable of describing: Ada B&W fall '07 floral print; Hildie/Zandi holiday '07 floral; animal print (fall '06 I think); Marti's graphic floral on a black background; sheer daisyish floral on black; Suzelly jacket lace; pale blue brocade; pale green with roses and wreaths.

I loved a couple of items, but I was disappointed by the majority (which is a good thing for my bank account). The Mayle ladies said that pieces are mostly 2-4-6. (Moya - the blouses will definitely fit you.) The next shipment will arrive at the shop on Tuesday or Wednesday, and will include the Avignon dress.

Some points of interest - the blouses are overpriced ($545 for a blouse?!). Also, the more recent the design, (generally) the better the details/quality. Mayle's recent patterns entail more work (clean, surprising contrast linings, pleated seams, exposed contrast zippers and hidden pockets).

That's all I can remember. Sorry for the long post!

It's absolutely worth dropping by to take it all in. Best of all, they've posted sample snaps from previous collections (I assume they are Jane's personal favorites) for all to take in.

This is all so exciting. I too was hoping not to be drawn it by all this, but it's definitely hard to resist.

marti, you got some great pieces! i really loved the striped petulia dress and it looks great reworked in lace!

the only two items that i really would like are the elvira dress (if they remake it) and the clogs (but not in leopard). if someone sees these or knows they are in, please let me know. i would also be totally willing to pay someone back who lives in new york.

i love this blog and will be sad to see mayle's demise as it is such a shared pleasure for all of us. thanks!

Marti - I just saw your snaps on your blog and your pieces are so, so lovely!

LivKate- I didn't get to the shop till quite late and your blouse was sold out. After trying on Petulia, I thought that if there was a blouse with that amazing black and white lace, I might totally lose my mind and snap it up. But it wasn't meant to be. The Sylvana blouses are really beautiful, and I think they are going to sell out of that style.

Moya - I got a Mitsu in the Amalfi flower print! I paid $425, which is about what I would have paid if I purchased a paradiso Mitsu after the 1st fall cut (which I nearly did but didn't, and yes, that is my justification!). The drape of the Amalfi Mitsu is amazing. I took pictures if you would like them - I might try to add them to flickr (never done that before, so it might be a production).

Melissa - what does Elvira look like? If I see it, I will post on Moya's blog. I've resolved to stop in every week at this point, so I'll keep an eye out.

lorochills said...

wow everyone is so great...i second melissa and will definitley send someone funds via paypal or a check...

cindy, yes your reports are so detailed...i think i need to review my old look books to see what i NEED...

Moya said...

If I see the items you want, I can pick them up. I'd need details. I can't spend a fortune, however, as I've got limits to my checking and credit cards. Another alternative is to call Doris or Elise.

Moya said...

I'd love to see people's pictures. If you want to post them to the Mayle flickr pool (which you should all join), I can then post some of them to the blog. I can't wait to go in today. I am waiting for Evan to get back from the gym so we can have breakfast and plan the day. I really want a billowy purple or bronze dress.

lorochills said...

moya-yes i wil try and call them...elise was good on email so i tried that already...we will see...i can't wait to hear about your trip to the store

Hi LivKate- I think that the pansy fabric was used in the suzelly jacket from last spring and also in one of the make up bags. Portland is alright there is just a general lack of great shops though Odessa has a good selection. Its a great city. At the moment we are living nicely on just my husbands salary.

I too hope that she re-cuts the elvira. I got that dress in both colors at the time and its one of my favorite summer pieces. I am definately getting the Avignon (depending on the fabric) its a classic dress.
