Mayle Spring 09?

KK just posted that Refinery 29 announced Mayle would be doing another highly limited collection and staying open until April. Obviously, it's thrilling news for us obsessive fans. While I was making dinner yesterday, I thought about how there would be no new lookbooks to flick through, no more planning and strategizing about which items to buy and when to get them. Then, last night, I dreamed that there was another final Mayle collection and, on waking, I thought it would even be great if she even remade some of her greatest hits (resort 06 please!) the way she did with the sandals and boots this season.

Getting this news gives me hope--and makes me wonder if I'm psychic (joke), if dreams come true, and if odds can be overturned. All of which takes me back to the baby stuff and makes me hope that one can work out in the same way.

But I also had a few other thoughts. When I was in Mayle a couple of weeks ago--the first day of the fall 60% markdowns--I spoke to Elise and asked when in February they were closing. She said no date had been set and it would be at least the end of the month. Given the real estate market, I'm sure that tenants aren't lining up to rent a small space, even a beautiful one, in Nolita. I also noticed several other shuttered/for rent storefronts near Mayle. While Elizabeth Street is lovely, most of the other boutiques are pretty dismal and seem to have little foot traffic. Mayle, Steven Alan, possibly Lyell, the gross Tory Burch and the sneaker store seem the exceptions, along with the perenially crowded Cafe Habana. So, it's possible a month-by-month lease extension was offered.

Secondly, business has been great for them as the recession killed other stores/designers--no elaboration needed. While we all have likely spent more on Mayle--buying before final markdowns, getting items we loved but might have otherwise skipped--we're not spending elsewhere. Fall 07 was one of her most amazing collections and much more went on sale--and was drastically reduced. This year, items have flown off the shelves. Maybe the closing down notice was good for sales (I'm sure it was), but regardless, she's done well when nobody else could sell items even at 80% off. This must have factored into the decision to stay in business.

Third, this will likely be really limited as most of her stockists aren't even selling resort/holiday. As I discovered in the UK, her international distribution has already pretty much ceased--Harvey Nicks didn't carry any Mayle after resort/holiday 07. So I imagine most of these pieces will be solely for the boutique and maybe Barneys/Opening Ceremony LA.

I anticipate this means there won't be much in the way of reductions. But on the positive side, I think it could mean resort/holiday gets another discount as people decide whether to get the really new items or go for the resort/holiday pieces on 30% markdown.

This may, of course, mean no final sample sale to close up house, especially as stock is pretty low. I'd even imagine that the new collection may revisit older styles, older fabrics, unless this was planned months in advance.

It could also mean that the idea of leaving refreshed Jane Mayle's desire to stay in business. Maybe hearing/reading various laments caused her to reconsider. Certainly, the girls at the store seemed a little happier than one would expect for people losing their jobs in a recession.

are you kidding me?

argh, and here i was secretly happy that i would maybe finally be able to save a bit of money.

but it's true, while in paris all i could think about was how boring everything is compared to mayle.

i wish i could make it out to nyc one last time before the baby arrives, just to smell the candle (i can't remember the scent's name).

crossing my fingers there's one last collection, i would love to look at something beautiful during such a depressing time.

Moya said...

I have to admit I felt the same way--a mixture of happiness and also damn, I need to save!

The candle is the Votivo Red Currant. I think you should splurge on one to nurture yourself at this important time.

It looks like it is happening for sure--I don't think this is a rumor.

Christina said...

The other day, I was strategizing on how I will be able to save after Mayle closes in feb. The money I have spent on Mayle in less than two months could have gone to more important things like food, health insurance or a Roth IRA, which I have yet to open. I posted this already but I did hear the baby billie bag will possibly make a comeback so it wouldn't surprise me if Jane brings back other popular styles.
ps-you can find the votivo red currant candles on ebay for cheap! I've seen them come out to $5 each sold as a lot.

Moya said...

Christina--in case you didn't see my other posts--call Bird on Fifth Ave now. Both Olympe and Ludovine in size 2 are on sale--Olympe is $269, Ludovine (in the birdseye) is $219!

Christina said...

I will call in a few mins...do you know if they have Mariko, bags or anything else good? I saw thea online 50% but not in putty.

Moya said...

They have no bags at all and I think they sold out of Mariko. They're doing their markdowns right now and I think the fifth ave store has most of the Mayle.

Let me know if you get anything. I'm going to head over there in around an hour. Right now, their website is down.

They only ever got Thea in black. I'm on the fence about it which is one reason to wait. I'd certainly get Ludovine in Birdseye at that price but they only have size 2 left.

Moya said...

Sorry--Olympe is $249!

wythe said...

glad to be the messenger for good news!

moya, any sense on the stock for the thea and theodora dresses at the nolita store or bird?

Moya said...

What size are you, KK? I know they are out of 10s in Thea but other than that, I'm not sure what they have. I need to get myself there again soon.

I know both dresses run a tiny bit small.

Moya said...

Bird have Thea only, in black but not putty. Sizes 0,2,4.6,8 but they may only have one of each.

Christina said...

Crap, I just spent too much money. I ordered Olympe, Ludovine and Yves in Rose. Yves was 159!! My Mitchi rose cost more than the dress so now I wish I had gotten Mitchi in dove. I called the Smith St and 5th ave stores. Anyone know what Grand has left? Damn, I need to stop now!!!!

Christina said...

5th had Zora sz 2 for 199 if anyone interested

Moya, they said they were out of belts but if you see the fleur or knots belt at 75% off, let me know or buy an extra for me and I'll send you money.

Moya said...

Absolutely--if I see the belts, I'll get one for each of us. I'm glad you got such great deals, Christina! I'm going to both Smith and Fifth Ave in the next hour--I'm glad I could help. It's great the way we're all finding deals for each other--your tip on Coplons was so great for me yesterday. I'm so pleased you found Yves--I'm stunned there were any left.

Grand is new so they may not have as much Mayle. Did Smith Street tell you what they had in stock?

Biscuit said...

those are fabulous bargains, christina!!! it's totally worth it to splurge now. i am feeling pretty a little sad about spending so much on olympe before, but can't really cry over spilt milk (money down the drain?).

thanks so much for the tip on zora, i called and snagged it! it was really one of my must-haves from holiday, so i am thrilled. did smith st have any other small sizes?

thanks, you guys are amazing!

Christina said...

5th had no bags left, zora in 2 and thea calliope black in 2-that's it in smaller sizes. The girls at 5th sounded preoccupied so I didn't ask about everything available. Their security alarm kept going off. Smith didn't have very much left, just olympe and yves which I snagged. They had the agnes on sale, 30% I think, and several canvas totes on sale.

Please fill us in on what you all find around Brooklyn! I wish we could all have gone shopping together today. Have fun! TGIF!

Biscuit said...

i think i probably called at a quieter time-- they also have pia (59 or 99, i can't remember, most sizes), penilope (159, 4 and 6), jeanne (i would have gotten this if they had my size-- only 109, m and l), boukris, and some harem pants.

i will let you know if i'm able to make it to jumelle! i see on their site that they have some of tops from holiday on sale (allegra, athena-- love both of these), but they're still way too expensive. but this weekend is looking pretty busy, so not sure if i'll get over there (while it is also in brooklyn, it's a pain to get to from park slope).

tgif, indeed!

Christina said...

received an email today that elux has additional 30% off. Moya, you can get Jeanne in Loden for 209 but you may be able to find it cheaper elsewhere.

wythe said...

moya, thanks for the inventory update on the thea dress! usually, i'm a 4 so that would probably put me closer to a 6 or 8 if it runs small. fingers crossed i can find some time today/tomorrow to stop by bird. any sense of whether it's worth it to stop by the nolita shop?

karen

Christina said...

Moya, thank you so much for the tip on Bird.
Susie, Impulse has a size 2 Mitsuko Paradiso online and tomorrow it will be marked down an additional 30% along with all of their fall/winter merch....I believe this includes Jemeen and Dezra! Perhaps they will hold it if you call today.

Karen, if you are in the vicinity of nolita this weekend, it may be worth it just to find out some scoop on this final limited collection and possible future sales on resort/holiday. Fill us in on what's left in-store.

In my opinion, I think that this end of Feb closing was a planned PR stunt in an effort to garner more press for the brand and Jane. As a result, this inevitably lead to a higher volume of sales on fuller priced items and those initial 30% sales as well. They totally knew they were closing in April but kept it hush hush.

I just hope she produces enough product for the final collection so us devotees can get what we want.

pine said...

Christina, you found an Yves dress! That's great, so they are around...do you remember if they had it in other sizes, size 8...I think that's the only piece I am hung up on now... I just tried calling but there was some connection problem and couldn't get through...
Senna ran a bit big, I thought. My sister's size 8 but is happy with a 6, thinks she could've even taken a 4. The fabric is a bit strange, not silk but quite hard, stiff with elastic, as Moya said, if you have a cat, I wouldn't do it. Also it doesn't really look like the lookbook, but my sister loves it, so this is a personal thing.

Moya, my Melia is in black. It's so beautiful, reminds me of another dress I own from Fall'06, in heavy dark gray silk and quite subtle, and fits just perfectly. Thanks for that suggestion of calling on Fridays, btw!

About this Mayle opening longer, it does seem like a trick a bit. My bf said that when he picked up my stuff from the store, that it was a smart marketing move, that Mayle wouldn't be really closing right away, but using the good old demand/supply tactic to sell a collection fast during a financially harrowing time. I remember telling him that he was a cynic, but it's true, if I hadn't gotten swept up by now-or-never panic, I would've never paid $485 for a dress!

I am so glad to see everyone's getting pieces at such good prices! So resourceful...love hearing what you are finding.

pine said...

Moya, about the Yves dress, do you think 6 might work? (they had it at Bird). My Mayle dresses are 8 although one of them is a bit big...) My coats are all 6, so I get tempted to try a 6, but then it might just not fit. My sister has a Mitch top in size 8, but thinks she could've bought a 6. Although it's a same fabric, Yves would be an entirely different fit...

Christina said...

Kim, I am a 0-2 in dresses so when I tried on Yves in a 0, it was just right but not at all tight on me because I'm not curvy and have more of a straight figure, small bust. In the lookbook, the model wears it loose but I would say you could get away with a 6 if you want it somewhat fitted. The arm holes, bust, hips are all generous so if you're curvy then it would probably work on you and actually flatter the figure. I really think it depends on how you want to wear this dress. I prefer this style loose on me. The price can't be beat and if it doesn't work, you can always sell it or have it slightly altered. I have the Mitchi top in 2 and it definitely runs large due to the huge pleats on the front, back and the balloon sleeves. By the way, how much was Senna selling for at Nolita?

pine said...

Thanks, that makes me think perhaps I could get away with a 6. When dresses are tight on me, I most worry about moving the arms comfortably, tight on chest (34C), and the waist (My Seven jeans are all about 29). The Bird salesgirl said that it seems about 30 waist. Gosh, it's so hard to judge this way. I do like a loose fit generally with dresses, since when the chest is tight, I feel fat rather than voluptuous... I have to decide quickly since it will probably sell out of course...

About Senna, I think it was around $250 at the store. But we got it at their 30 percent sale a while ago, so not much of a deal. For me, I would never wear it. The fabric's stiff, it's a bit awkward, not really a jacket, more of a shirt. That's one item that looks very different from what I imagined (kinda the way Ludovine Birdseye, to me, looked different from the picture) My sister can pull it off because she's a vintage artsy girl and but on me, it looks a bit like a costume, like I am in a school play. But this is a personal taste. If you are 0-2, you would need a 0 in Senna.

pine said...

Oh I meant that Odette birdseye looked very different from the lookbook when I finally saw it in person. Ludovine birdseye is beautiful, I think. I really love my Ludovine black and could easily have one in birdseye too! And about paying more for Ludovine black, it's impossible to predict these things, I think you lose some and gain some...remember I paid so much for my Melia! I have a feeling you will find your Melia on sale, Moya, especially now that Mayle's staying around a bit longer!

erica said...

the totokoaelo markdowns are posted now. i am still feeling a bit annoyed about paying $370 for my eniko dress. but it's true, you win some, you lose some.

i'm sitting this one out in case there are more resort/holiday reductions, although i should just buy the aiko in sable and get it over with!

the prices are so good right now, i'm feeling sheepish about my past purchases.

mel said...

wow, christina, you did get some amazing deals! you will love the olympe; it's so chic. i've been wearing mine everyday.

i did crack and buy the ludovine in birdseye yesterday from eluxury, since it was an extra 30% off. and for all those interested they have a 6 and a 10 in stock.

and to everyone who's feeling a little bad about earlier Mayle purchases (this includes myself), just remember think about ALL those times when you've waited for an item you've desperately been wanting, decided to get the item a few days later only to find it sold. this has already happened to me a number of times this season. so just think you might not have it
at all. it sucks to have paid more; i agree. but that's the price we pay for being fashion slaves ;)

Moya said...

Sorry to jump into this late. Kim--I think the 6 Yves would work on you. I have the 10, and it is big. But the 8 may have not fit--it is small in the back but baggy in the waist and chest. You can't beat the price.

Also, Erica, Aiko is $119 in M and L at Bird on Smith Street--no sables, but it is a great deal. I think you'd want the M--I wish I had the large.

They also had Ninon in brown at Fifth Ave for $99.

Smith St. had Zora for $199 in 2, 4 in putty.

Both stores had Thea in black but it runs tiny in the shoulders so I had to pass on the 8. The hips fit fine, however.

Bird was a bust for me, though. I got a Pi organic long sleeved striped white/grey t-shirt for $19 down from $90 from the Smith St. store. They were all out of Mayle in my size, other than Aiko which I have and paid a lot more for, let me add. Again, what can we do? I have waited and lost items in the past and we all got some really great steals.

Christina, I saw your Odette and Yves on the rack waiting to be packed up! I am so pleased this worked so well for you.

Biscuit said...

sorry to hear bird was a bust, moya. did you get anything from totokaelo, or check back in with metier?

i have to go over to bird to pick up zora later. i think it might be marked down further at the nolita store since they made so many of them, but i do love the top and wouldn't want to lose out on it. reading everyone's comments about trying not to regret having spent too much too early is making me feel better. this is like a mayle addicts' support group! thanks everyone!

i am wondering if vod still has that yves in 0 and whether/when they will mark it down further. . .

the barneys warehouse sale is coming up soon, too. i always go on one of the last days and have gotten some amazing bargains there (last year i got a marni dress for $160 and a $3000 bottega veneta dress marked down to $200! not that it was ever worth $3000 to begin with). christina, did you ever have any luck with barneys? i wish i had snagged hera when they had it.

hope everyone is having a great weekend!

pine said...

Thanks, Moya! I just bought the Yves rose in size 6. The girl at Bird was so nice, a marked difference from Mayle, made me want to definitely check out the store when I am back in town. Of course now, there's the whole hassle of having to get this mailed to me out here, which I might just not bother, considering there might be yet another Mayle collection, and this process might just continue on and on...

Erica, I think there's a point in just getting it over with at some point. I wasted so much time looking at the website -- must say Mayle lookbook really is no help -- and going back and forth on sizing, etc, when in fact I could've just bought the Yves two weeks ago, sure, for like 40 dollars more, but then time is also money.

This blog's been so great through all this btw. I would've been quite lost with each decision, certainly it would've been less fun. I hope it's providing some comfort for you, Moya, and that your fortuitous instincts are spreading across all aspects of your life!

Moya said...

I'm so glad you got the Yves, Kim. I wished I'd had a number for you yesterday so I could have called/texted and put it on hold! I also should have texted Erica about the Aiko now that I think about it... It is in black by the way--I know you aren't as into black but it is such a deal.

Also, Karen, I meant to mention that you should be able to fit in a 6 or 8 in the Thea. It's definitely cut smallest in the shoulders and I knew I'd either strain the fabric or tear it, so I made the tough decision to pass. Also, I prefer Zora overall and I hope I can get one in the next round of markdowns.

This blog and the community it has opened up has thrilled me. I am so pleased we can help each other out--I love hearing about everybody's finds. I hope we'll carry on this way when Mayle shuts, even if the conversation takes different directions.

I didn't get anything at Totokaelo--they had next to nothing left in 8-10 or L. If Mayle hadn't announced another collection, I may have sprung for the Aiko sable or the Bebbo in gray (it's gone now anyway) or even Jemeen. But I suspect Jemeen will be reduced further, especially as it runs so large. And, truthfully, Bebbo and Jemeen appeal more because they are Mayle than anything else. As I have one Aiko already and own several sable and black cardigans, I'll pass on that too and put the money towards something else.

It's interesting how these things work--Coplons was great for me but Bird a bust. I'm so pleased that I can find great things in other sizes and know you girls can take advantage of these bargains.

Still no sale belt or bag finds, though.

Susie--let us know what you find at Jumelle. And, Kim, let us know what you find if you head into Nolita.

Susie--it sounds like we're both F-train girls!

Moya said...

Whoops, I mean Karen, if you head into Nolita, not Kim--I know you are out in Korea. I was on the phone with Mum and that's what happens when I multitask.

Biscuit said...

yes, i am right on the f at 9th st! where are you? we've been in the slope for about 2.5 years, but we are probably moving back into manhattan in april (just waiting to sign a lease).

i just came back from bird and the sale is amazing. it was very busy in the shop. i was very, very bad and bought two coats, which is two coats more than i need right now. but i will be getting rid of some of my older coats- maybe on laws of general economy! other than picking up zora, i also got the wooly collar from fall(like the collar on the short trench, but a separate piece), which i am excited about.

moya, let's meet up before i move away! the next few weekends are extremely busy for me, but maybe we can get together at the end of the month for some window shopping.

Moya said...

Congratulations on your finds, Susie. I'm at Fort Hamilton Parkway--only 4 stops away. We should certainly meet up soon--although you won't be too far away!

What coats did you get? Tell all!

Biscuit said...

i'm definitely feeling a little guilty about the coats, but they were such amazing bargains i couldn't resist. i got a short navy wool coat by martin margiela (mm6) that was $159 down from $645. and a brown tweed apc coat that is reminiscent of the lyell shirley coat (which i coveted and missed out on) with a flowy pleat down the back and a slightly nubbly texture (though not quite boucle). that was $179. also, i forgot to add that i got a plaid men's apc shirt for $29, which i plan to give to my friend since it didn't fit my boyfriend (although i am actually wearing it around the house right now --maybe i will keep it!). there were some really great deals on men's clothing at bird, too.

totally shopped out (for now)! i really need to start selling some of my stuff on ebay. i have a bunch of lyell pieces and few older mayle pieces that i am going to give up since i really don't wear them enough (some things even still have tags, embarrassingly enough).

Christina said...

Susie, vod had Yves a few days ago when I called. It's one the few fall pieces they have left. When I was in there last month it was 350 and now it's 300. If you really want it, I'd call, email to inquire about further markdowns. Moya, I wish you had better luck at Bird.
I called Barneys last week to locate the Zoia top and it appears that it is sold out everywhere. Their online CS can't look up Mayle in their system so you have to call one of the stores. Also, a majority of their sale items have been removed from co-op. I assume these will be on their way to the outlets. Perhaps the outlets will have leftover Mayle from last season so it may be worth a shot to call. I'm glad I waited because everything I got from fall was discounted 60-75%. Fall was easy to locate on sale but I imagine it will be difficult to find resort/holiday at 60-75% so we may have to pay more. Then there's this final collection which I'm dying to see!!

Susie, what Mayle pieces are you planning to sell? There's an Ada dress and Anahi top in 4 on ebay. Anyone have either one of these? I really love the Ada but not familiar with the fabric and fit. There are so many lovely styles from fall 07-if only I had bargain hunted then!

Ron Herman has up to 80% sale-anyone know if they still carry Mayle? Also, I emailed this shop (http://shopvanjean.com) and evidently they carry Mayle but would not send me a list of stock. I think they are in Canada so they may not ship.

Moya said...

I think Barneys may send their Mayle to the warehouse sale, but I'm not sure.

I have Anahi in 8. It is huge but I love it--although I could probably fit in a 2 or 4, maybe even a 0 like the Harumi I'm wearing now!

I hope you are having a good weekend, Christina--and everybody else.

Moya said...

Van Jean's is in Columbia, SC (I googled the area code while on a brief writing break). I think that's a good find, Christina. One of us should call them next week. I doubt there are as many Southerners after Mayle if Coplons is anything to go by! Thanks for digging out these stockists--I don't know how you do it!

Christina said...

Yes, they are in SC! Actually, I found VanJean last year via flickr when I was looking for photos of past seasons. Today, I was clearing out old emails and found an email from them received in november. For some reason, I thought they were in Canada so that's why I forgot about them. In the email, they said they had a little bit of holiday left and a few bags so cross your fingers!! I just googled some more and it appears they are clearing out their fall and winter up to 90% off. We better pounce on this soon!

Christina said...

I found vanjean on facebook and they have photos of their resort collections, which includes Mayle! Yay! Moya, they have your Jacinthe lavender dress and Melia! I hope they have your size. I just emailed them to check what's on sale.

Moya said...

Thanks so much Christina. If they have 8--10s and any bags/belts, my credit card is ready to pounce! I hope this works for all of us--I really hope I can get Melia, Zora, Hera, etc--and if I can find a Ludovine in birdseye or a Jeanne/Agnes bag, I'll be delighted.

You are the best Mayle sleuth!

Susie--those coats are great deals. There won't be these discounts next year and coats are such amazing investments.

Moya said...

I just called Vanjean's and left a message. I guess they aren't open on Sundays. I asked about their Mayle stock and hope I hear back some good news soon. If anybody else hears anything, please share here.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend everybody.

Biscuit said...

christina, i am planning on selling two tops and a couple of dresses, most likely. unfortunately i don't know the names of any of them except for the vivi dress in tobacco. oh, and i might sell basia. if you are interested in seeing them, i can see if i can snap some pictures of them, maybe next weekend.

hope everyone's monday is painless!

Christina said...

Moya, let us know if VanJean has anything left on sale. Hopefully, they will email me back about smaller sizes. I emailed the shoptart.com and she told me the Coplons in Columbia carried Mayle. Did you call that location the day you ordered from Richmond? She mentioned that shopworthwhile.com in Charleston carries Mayle as well. They have a pair of sz 2 coulottes on their site.

Susie, is your Basia the blue or almond in color? If you list your Mayle on ebay, let me know.

Moya said...

Vanjean never got back to me, Christina. I am going to try and call them this afternoon--I've been teaching all day and haven't had a chance yet. I suspect they have nothing but I'll let you know what I find out.

lorochills said...

hello i just found this and i am so happy there is a great community of people who love mayle. i was wondering if anyone can help me and let me know how big the mayle olympe coat is and where could i get one at the best deal? i am usually a size 6 in mayle

Moya said...

Hi Loretta! I think Olympe runs true to size to small (I'm usually an 8 in Mayle coats, 8-10 in dresses and would get a 10 in Olympe). I'd check out shopzoeonline.com--they have Olympe for $303 (not sure which sizes) which is 70% off. Let us know if you get it.

Moya said...

Loretta, Zoe have 4, 6, and 8 left in Olympe. Good luck!

lorochills said...

great moya i will let you know how i make out i really am trying my best not to spend but its okay i guess since its one of the last seasons right? oh well will keep you posted
