Mayle Sale

I just got an email announcing the Mayle sale (interrupting my writing about film censorship in Chicago in 1907-14...). It sounds OK but not necessarily splendid. Here goes:

Starting tomorrow, Fall clothing 60% off; Holiday & Resort clothing 30% off

Select accessories are also on sale.

Susie--are you up for meeting in the frigid cold? I don't know if I need more Fall, and I want more than 30% off Holiday and Resort. Still, it is a start.

That said, the last Mayle sale at 40% off was not only a zoo, but the items were available elsewhere for less. Totokaelo and Hush have their resort and holiday stock for less. And I just got Penilope yesterday for over 60% off. Just a note, I feel illiterate typing Penilope and cannot understand why the dress wasn't called Penelope. I guess this is what happens when you are a professor and one of your responsibilities is teaching writing.

agree that this doesn't sound that enticing. in any event, i definitely can't meet during the week-- i have been at the office until past midnight every day this week and will probably have to work most of the weekend. we shoudl at least try to meet up for a coffee or something when my schedule clears, even if we don't hit any mayle sales!

Moya said...

Totally. If you want me to look for anything let me know. I can put it on hold for you if they let me.

I'm sorry you are so busy--my next few days are crazy as I have to write until school starts.

I hope things calm down a bit for you two very soon. Was NYC in a frenzy today with the plane crash and all? I'm glad everyone escaped and no one was killed-truly a miracle.

I am calling the shop tomorrow to check on availability of some items from fall. I would love the Kita top, Mitsuko top in Paradiso, Eniko dress in Ivory, Mitsu dress, Mitchi top and Mariko top. I'm sure most of these are sold out but just one item would minimize the craving. I'm thinking about Olympe or Ludovine only if the price is right.

I called Barneys in SF yesterday because they had Eniko in stock but it sold hours before I called. I wanted it even more after I saw erica's post on her blog.

Hunting for sales is too much work!

NYC was pretty frenzied today--I am so pleased all those people were OK. It is also so cold here right now so I can't imagine what it would be like to be in the Hudson River. That said, had the plane gone down anywhere else, there would have been hundreds dead.

Back to Mayle. I think they get returns but the last time I was in, they were out of the Paradiso in everything but the Satchi jacket in size 8. I think they had some of the Eniko dresses left in Ivory Paradiso. All the Eden print items including the Kita shirt sold out long ago (indeed, I never saw them). I think they had some Mitsu dresses in Ivory Paradiso and black and in the all-black. The Mitchi top, Mariko top and Yves dress also sold out before the sale--while I have Yves, I have never seen either top in person.

They had Olympe and Ludovine--and while I have the black Ludovine, I'd recommend the birdseye if they have it because it is a nicer fabric and shows the detail. I imagine these will be around $300 which is a deal. I may even go for another Ludovine in birdseye myself.

From memory, when I was last in there before they put fall away, they also had Ebba, Gia, Hilaire, Mura sweater, Yumi vest, Liliane, Jeanne, Emmanuelle jacket, Veva in black, Cecile blouse, Odette in blue, Marion, Claudie top, Kiyoko dress (prettier than it looks in the lookbook), Ninon cardigan, Tama (which fits oddly and is narrower and higher necked than in the lookbook), Berengere coat, Ayame sweater, Aiko cardigan and Kaori.

Basically, the Eden and checked print items had sold out, as had the skirts and pants (which surprised me).

Moya, thanks for the inventory update! You have a great memory. I will definitely consider ludovine in birdseye if it's around 300. I hope I can get eniko for around the same price it sold at barneys.

sebastians has a site coming soon but no email contact listed. http://www.studiosebastian.com/
You can call them at 214.360.9001. Ask about the sales rack as past seasons are 60-85% off. I was in there around nov when they had just received resort and honestly, I was overwhelmed at the amount of stock they had. I had never seen so much mayle in person and didn't know where to begin. I can't remember specific sizes because I was in a rush to get out of there since they were near closing. I tried on a few items from holiday, resort and evelia. Left with nothing since I can't afford full price and evelia was a disappointment. They had the helen and kita tops which I completely fell in love with and the fit was so right. I figure tops are a better investment and go further since they can be dressed up/down and layered with a sweater or jacket.

Another stockist is Coplons but I have yet to contact them via phone. http://www.coplons.com/
Have you tried Opening Ceremony in LA? I emailed them for an inventory list but they denied my request as their inventory is quite large. There's also Diavolina in LA. I hate that name by the way.

Hope you encounter some good deals.

Thanks so much Christina! I am going to Mayle today--I can ask them to hold Ludovine for you and anything else you need. What size would you need? I think Ludovine should be around $300 (it was $865, so 60% off would be $346).

I hate the name Diavolina too. I will call Sebastian. My friend Chris is in Garland--I wish he was free to go in for me as he's the best shopper ever. We've just been debating whether he should get some D and G blue cords, or warm up pants, or both.

I am planning to call when they open so don't worry about me. Thanks for asking though! I'm actually in ft worth so dallas is still an hour away. I'm hoping I can make it to vod and sebastians next week. I vowed not to spend any more money on clothing, however, Mayle is the only exception given the fact that she is closing.
Oh yeah, have you been to INA consignment? I heard the nolita store at 21 prince has mayle from past seasons. Check them out if you have time!

Moya said...

INA is horribly expensive--I've been there before and if they have Mayle, it would be around $400 for a dress. I don't know how they stay in business--I think people go there because they know the clothing comes from models and stars.

Like you, I am only buying Mayle and the occasional item I like from Lyell, Inhabit and Steven Alan. I counted this morning that I have around 35 pieces from Mayle (including shoes), about 24 from Lyell and a whopping 60+ items from Club Monaco--not to mention the pieces from Steven Alan, Inhabit, Autumn Cashmere, Earnest Sewn, etc. That gave me pause: I wear most of it, sure, but do I really need most of what I buy?

I know that if Mayle wasn't closing, I'd likely buy less. But if I want anything it really is becoming now or never.

If you get to Sebastians next week, please post a full report! Until then, let us know what Mayle has left. I'm going in to the city in about 2 hours.

i went to INA consignment a month or so ago (the one in nolita). i saw a few mayle dresses, but they were crazy expensive. ignacia for somewhere around $350. an ugly purple dress from a few seasons ago. there was one really beautiful long dress, almost floor-length, and also purple, with rosettes and an open back, but it was $400!!!

hmmm, i may have to call sebastian. maybe they would give us a list of what they have since we have so many people interested!

Moya said...

If you call Sebastian Susie, can you let me know what they have in 8 ad 10? I can't call yet as I am on the phone with a colleague.

Christina said...

I just called Mayle and it sounds like a madhouse in there. After all, it's lunch!! The girl who answered could barely assist me so I'm gonna call back in 30 mins. ugh

I'm going in around 3. I imagine it will be picked dry by then, but if I can't get a Billie Doux bag, then I'll live. I also wouldn't mind Ludovine but I already have it in black.

I can't afford resort or holiday at 30% off so anything marked down is still out of my price range.

I stopped by Mayle today -
Lots of varied items but seemed just a few of each. Apparently, Opening Ceremony LA had sent back a bunch of items (so, christina, no need for their list apparently). I think most of the fall will go quick given the prices but Definitely worth stopping by. They were continuing to bring out items piece meal as well.

Plus, a very nice part, Jane was there. She is so lovely and was very gracious. A few women were thanking her, and chatting a bit with her. It was really nice to be in the store with her.

Moya, there was also a black and smoke billie doux..

Christina, I think there was a ludovine in 10, at least for a bit. Not the black, but the pattern. They also had the Olympes in both black and white.

I also agree with you all that Mayle is really the only thing I would open my wallet up for right now...

Oh, they also had the Jacinthe in black which is gorgeous in person. A really pretty pattern in the center panels. The purple/tan was also there, but much more springy feeling.

Ok, must get back my regular day but Happy shopping and I hope you are able to visit/call and find what you are looking for!

susie- thanks for the size rec. on the olympe coat. unfortunately, when i got to mayle today (driving up from dc), they had sold out of it! i did manage to track one down at louis boston in a size 4. hopefully that will work out.

fyi - they have a size 6 in the olympe as well at louis boston, in case anyone else wants it, for 60% off 995!

mel said...

oops-- i meant mayle had sold out of the olympe in size 2. they had larger sizes (6 and 8) in both the black and cream.

Biscuit said...

la garconne has olympe in size 2 for $505. they've marked down some of their other items, too. but no movement on the things i like. really, how can they be charging nearly $400 for something from 4 seasons ago??? i may also start keeping an eye on odette (also marked down, though barely), though by the time it becomes reasonable it will probably be august. or who knows, maybe it will be next winter!!

mel said...

susie- i really wanted the olympe in the black, and louis boston is the only place i could find that had that color. i really hope the size 4 fits ok. can i ask you what size you got (if you got it, that is) and also what size you take in mayle dresses? thx...

Biscuit said...

i have a zero, but i think i really should have gotten a 2. but i think i mentioned before that it also looks good a bit slouchy. so a 4 should be ok. i remember when i bought mine, a woman about my size tried on a 6 and even that looked good on her.

i wear a 2 in most mayle.

good luck!

I saw Jane in the store too, Julie. We must have been there at the same time. She seemed really busy tagging the items they got in from Opening Ceremony so I didn't want to interrupt her.

I got the Billie Doux in sable suede--I think it was the last one. I spent too much, again. I was amazed by all the stock. Evidently they recut Zora so they have a lot of them left and it will therefore likely go down one more time. I got two tops as well--a pre-fall cardigan I've seen nowhere (it has puffed three-quarter sleeves and is knitted so it looks pleated). I also got Harumi in size 0. It ran so large that it was an easy fit.

I nearly got the knee high boots but at nearly $600, I put them on hold so I can sleep on the matter. They are really, really comfortable. Maybe they will reduce them once more?

Moya said...

Also, I tried on Olympe (it doesn't work on someone so tall) and I can see how it might work better going up a size.

Girls, go to http://metiersf.blogspot.com RIGHT NOW!

As I type this, they are marking down their stock to 60% and there are still some good pieces left. I just called to inquire and they have their entire Mayle inventory listed on their blog. Apparently, they had some amazing deals earlier in the week. For instance, Zandi in an 8 for 75.00!!!! Moya!?! I wish I saw this sooner. Anyways, I got Kita and Mitsuko Paradiso for 145.20 each. Not bad considering they were some of the most coveted pieces from fall. The shipping was a killer 20.00. That hurt but I think I still got a good deal. Their original prices are less than others, including the Nolita shop, and the girls there are super sweet. Mayle had nothing left except for Mitchi in rose, size 2 for 190.00. I ordered it and now I'm feeling serious buyer's remorse since I got a better deal at Metier. It was one of the must haves on my list from fall so I'm not going to fret. I have never spent so much on clothes before in such a short time span but Mayle is worth every penny. lol

Christina said...

I wish you girls spoke with Jane to try to get some info on her future plans and if there will be a blowout sale at the end! Is her beauty and presence intimidating in person?

Moya said...

Those were great deals, Christina. I'm so glad you got them. I think you will love Mitchi though. It was one of the first items to sell out and was so beautiful. You still got a good deal on your Mayle.

Actually, I thought Jane Mayle seemed exhausted. She was trying to retag items from Opening Ceremony and the girls were helping. She was busy and trying not to make eye contact. I could tell she just wanted to get the work done and respect that.

As for presence, if it wasn't that I knew who she was, I wouldn't have noticed her. She's tall (my height) and attractive, but not drop-dead beautiful.

Moya said...

And thanks so much for the Metier info. Maybe we'll get more Mayle yet from here and other sources. You are great at keeping abreast of her stockists, Christina. Alas, I'm too big to fit into what's left, other than the skirt--which looks like one I already own.
