Yesterday, my old friend Jan was in from Wisconsin and as it was a miserable and damp day, we ended up hanging out in Park Slope. Towards the end of the afternoon, we ended up in Bird where Jan sat down and I tried on clothes, specifically Mayle. I realized the Ludovine coat in birdseye is completely adorable, if very light weight and now I want it! Odette is gorgeous too (and very warm) and on my list of must-haves on sale. I tried on Thea in black (they don't have putty). I like it a lot, but wish it was in slightly heavier fabric (I wonder why it wasn't in glazed cotton as I think that would be a great combination). The Zora (I think) top with lace from holiday is lovely but really light weight (it is the same silk as Thea, but Thea is lined) and the lace is so low that some may feel immodest wearing it. No markdowns yet but Jan says she thinks the coats will all go on sale as they have a lot of Ludovines left.
Today, after a long day of teaching I headed to the Housing Works sample sale. I got home only to check racked.com and find out that this event was happening and had Mayle at 50-75% off. So I put my boots back on and went into Manhattan even though I was tired and wanted to do anything but shop. Basically, the sale was for a great cause (Housing Works is a charity for homeless people with HIV and those at risk of homelessness). But the clothes were disappointing. All that was left of Mayle (and maybe all they had) were a few pieces from summer: about three Rosamelina dresses in 4-6 which were always too hippy-ish for me (although I tried it on, just in case and found my assumption correct); three Anna Claudia in 4-6 (too small). Both were (I think) $250 or $300. They also had one Mia in size 6 for the same price, a Delaura top in blue for $165 in size 8 and some of the white peasant top with black trim whose name I can't remember (Zhazra?), again 2, 4, 6. I nearly got Delaura but she wasn't so great that I could justify it with sales coming up. I left empty handed.
So I did some searching and Odessa have Mayle for 50% off--and, Susie, they have Veva in all sizes for, I think, $280! They do mail order and are super-fast with shipping. I got two pieces from them in September and recommend them highly. I may order Ludovine tomorrow and maybe a cardigan.

I love your blog since you adore Mayle as much as I do and so envious you are in NYC area to actually try on her gorgeous clothes. Do you know where I can get the Odette coat at 50% or more off or when Bird/Impulse will mark this coat down? I know this style will sell out fast and it's the coat I've been looking for and could wear for years. Glad you mentioned that it was warm because I was wondering about that. I'm looking for size 2 but am not completely familiar with the fit of Mayle coats. Do they run true to size?
ps-please post photos of your Mayle findings!
hi! this is so funny-- i was at that sale, too! i was there around 4:30 or so. i ended up getting mia even though it was a little more than i wanted to pay, but it goes to a great cause, so i don't mind as much. i also managed to find a top, i don't remember the name of it-- the top yoke is a cream-colored, violetta-like crocheted linen, and then the bottom is a greenish-brown and black striped pattern.
which bird do you go to? i'm wondering if odette is going to sell out. thanks for the tip on odessa-- is it only pre-fall? which cardigan are you going to get?
i'm happy there are other mayle junkies out there! my boyfriend thinks i'm crazy.
I was at Housing Works at the same time! I go to both Birds but buy most from Park Slope (formerly 7th Ave, now on 5th Ave). I don't think Odette is going to sell out but I think it won't make it beyond first markdown. Bird has it in most sizes, but only one of each. I haven't been in Mayle recently because I don't want to tempt myself into paying full price for anything. I think Odette is rarer than Ludovine--and much, much warmer--so I expect it will get reduced. It is not on sale anywhere yet--if it was, I'd own it! It runs a tiny bit small. I am usually an 8 in Mayle coats and the 6 fits. If I want to wear a thick sweater underneath, I need an 8. It is very heavy wool, so you can go a size down and wear a finer sweater underneath. I imagine Bird will mark it down around early December--usually, they have their sales a little late. Impulse may reduce it sooner--I have no luck with them though as they only stock the smaller sizes!
Odessa has all its Fall Mayle for 50% off--but they only have a few items in my size--Veva, Ludovine, Aiko (the thick cardigan which I want but want to spend less than $150 on it--this is an item that will linger I think). You should contact them, Susie. They are super nice and fast to reply and ship. You got some good finds--I think the top is Simone, right?
My boyfriend thinks I am a little crazy on this but he knows how much it matters to me. I know I won't spend that much on clothing after they close, except picking up lingering items online and on ebay. I love Lyell too but not as much.
I mean Odette runs large! Ludovine is true to size. Mayle's sizing varies quite a bit--I have 6, 8, 10s and some of her 10s are too small. She cuts small in the back and the upper arms, but her coats tend to be true to size or large.
I will post photos of my finds. I haven't received my ebay package yet.
hmmm. i may have to give up hope on odette then. i am going back on forth on ludovine. i only tried on the tweed version at bird, but i think i would want the black wool version. i'm not sure if i love it enough to spend that much on it. i need a solid winter coat and the bracelet sleeves worry me a little. if i buy this coat, i really need to go on a shopping hiatus!!
I wouldn't give up hope but I wouldn't bank on it. It is selling out at eluxury, impulse and lagarconne, but Mayle may have it. What size do you wear? I'll keep an eye out and let you know what I find. Everybody seems to have Ludovine (the other coat--the white one--is the rarest of the current Mayle offerings along with the tweed Odette). Black Odette seems to be next. I actually really like Ludovine on, especially the tweed one, but it is the black that is on sale at Odessa.
I would probably need a 0 in Odette since it is running big. I tried on the 4 and it was much too big on me. Have you seen the Ludovine in black wool in person? How heavy is the wool? I sent Susan an email to see if they still have it, in any event.
Thanks for all of your advice!
It is a really lightweight wool--I imagine it is more a fall coat. I think if Odette in 4 is big, 2 might work too. Ludovine runs smaller. I need an 8, whereas I could get away with a 6 in Odette.
I'm getting Ludovine--I just ordered it. Odessa never received Odette. She's also not getting any resort/holiday items. I'm now going to check out Aiko in person as I may get it too--it seems like stock is limited.
Also, Veva, in my opinion, runs small, especially on the hips/legs.
So I went by both Bird and Mayle yesterday. I definitely need a 0 in Odette, and both places are definitely sold out of that size! I think I was even preparing myself mentally to pay full price for it. Oh well!!
Aiko is very soft in real life, it seems like the perfect cozy winter sweater. Not sure whether I am going to get Veva or not. Also, the girls at the shop confirmed that there's going to be a resort collection coming out in early December. Then they're shutting down the shop in February. So sad!
I think they have a 0 in Odette in eluxury, Susie. Did you notice if they had big sizes (8-10) in Mayle? And did they say when they would be making the first reductions on Fall? How much stock was left in Mayle?
We should shop together some time. In the meanwhile I got Aiko--or ordered it from Odessa. Susan had already sold the large but I think I only need the medium as it is a sweater after all.
I think Veva may go down to 70% off. It is not my favorite piece from Fall--the fabric is lovely but the style is not as original as some Mayle dresses.
In case the fashion boudoir site is dodgy, they have a 0 in Lagarconne but it is $1,150. I suspect it will go on sale there sometime as that's more than anybody is charging.
hmm, i didn't notice if they had any larger sizes at the shop, since they only had one of each item out. there were still a lot of fall items out, but i didn't see ebba there. i didn't ask when they would be putting fall on sale-- do you normally receive emails from them about that?
i don't understand why la garconne is charging a full $250 more for odette than any other sites. i will have to keep an eye on it. i much prefer the blue, though. fashionboudoir.com is definitely a scam-- beware!
agree on veva. i will reconsider if it goes down to 70% off. can't wait to see pictures of your ebay find! i recently got an older piece on ebay, the black and white striped dress (there is another one on ebay right now). it's perfect!
I thought fashion boudoir maybe a scam--especially when the sizing page turned out to be a place holder site.
Lagarconne always overprices--I think they are charging the price for the tweed Odette which ran higher (I think it was %1,150). I can't see them selling Odette for that price and think they will reduce it. You may want to contact Metier in Seattle and Louis Boston as both stock Mayle but have no ecommerce.
I imagine pre-fall is not out right now and is in storage to return after the fall. It is up on their website but that's always iffy--they appear to have everything long after items sell out.
As long as they have a lot of different items out, they probably have a lot of stock--usually they only have the smallest size on the rack. I am going to try to go in on Monday but I am trying so hard not to pay full price. I'll also ask about Ebba then.
Congratulations on your black and white dress--I loved that one! It was definitely a find.
thanks for the tip! i will contact both of them. did susan from odessa tell you what else she had in stock, or did you only ask about your size? i liked both liliane and marion, but i'm wondering if i should just wait until mayle puts the fall collection on sale. oh decisions! (frivolous shopping decisions, but still :)
Good luck, Susie. I spoke to Susan about the smaller sizes--she seemed to have more in those. I think she has Marion--I can't remember if she has Liliane--but I know she had more stock in the small sizes than the big ones. She is really friendly and will look up things for you. She even responded immediately to the emails I sent her around midnight last night (granted it was only 8 p/m/ on the west coast).
And like you, I keep thinking I should wait until Mayle's 60% reductions, but this isn't any year. If Jane Mayle wasn't shuttering the business, I think we'd be able to get everything on sale.
Let me know how Metier and Louis Boston work out with Odette. You may do better with Metier as they are in California and have different tastes and weather.
